Kansas Wraps Up USA Winter Nationals Trip with Fast Times

Final Results

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Kansas freshman Hannah Driscoll swam the fastest time by a Jayhawk in the 100-yard freestyle this season, breaststrokers Bryce Hinde and Lydia Pocisk each dropped nearly five seconds from their season-best times and Chelsie Miller swam a Big 12 leading 1650-yard freestyle as KU finished competition at the AT&T USA Winter Nationals at the Greensboro Aquatics Complex Saturday. KU alumna Danielle Herrmann swam to a sixth-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, capping a run that saw her finish in the top eight in three different events.

Driscoll, who set a lifetime best in a 200-yard freestyle time trial on Thursday, finished 48th  in the 100 free prelims Saturday morning with a time of 51.22, more than a second faster than her season-best and the quickest by a Jayhawk during the fall semester.

Fellow freshman Lydia Pocisk kept the improvement trend rolling for Kansas when she cut 4.86 seconds off her season-best time in the 200-yard breaststroke prelims to finish 59th in 2:19.10. Bryce Hinde dropped 4.74 seconds from her season-best time to finish 33rd in the same event in 2:16.54. Hinde’s time was among the top-5 Big 12 results entering the weekend and just half a second off her lifetime best of 2:15.95 swam at the 2013 Big 12 Championships.

Miller, who was tabbed as the Big 12 Conference’s Swimmer of the Week Wednesday and claimed a silver medal in the 400-yard individual medley Friday, closed her nationals meet with a solid season debut in the mile. Miller finished seventh in the final heat that produced the first of back-to-back American Records in the 1650-yard freestyle and placed 21st overall with a time of 16:34.48. Based on results prior to the weekend, that’s the fastest time in the Big 12 and among the top-35 nationally at this point of the season.

Herrmann swam a 2:10.27 in the ‘A’ final heat of the 200 breaststroke – nearly five seconds faster than her KU best from 2008 – to place sixth after placing fourth in the 100 breaststroke on Friday night. A swimmer at Kansas for head coach Clark Campbell from 2005-09 and former assistant coach, Herrmann also finished seventh in the 200 IM during Thursday’s finals.

Along with the Jayhawk Open in Lawrence, Saturday’s competition marked the end of the fall season for Kansas. The Jayhawks will continue their season in 2015 at the UCLA/San Diego double-dual in Los Angeles (Jan. 10) and host two more meets at Robinson Natatorium while prepping for the 2015 Big 12 Championships in February.
