LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas women’s tennis ran past UT Arlington, 4-0, to push its opening run to 7-0. The Jayhawks are one win away from having the best season opener since the programs’ inaugural season.

Kansas (7-0, 0-0 Big 12) is tied for the best start in 20 years with a 7-0 record.  In the 1992 and 2012 seasons, Kansas opened with a 7-0 streak. Kansas’ best opening run came in its first season in 1977, when the Jayhawks put up an impressive 11-0 run before falling to Texas.

Kansas’ win over UT Arlington (3-3, 0-0 Sun Belt) ties up the series, 1-1.

The Jayhawks started off the competition on a high note with doubles, a strength for the Kansas team. Maria Jose Cardona and Maria Belen Ludueña struck first, defeating UTA’s Elizabeth Thoms and Ekaterina Tugarinova, 8-1. Kansas only needed one more win to claim the doubles point and the pair of Dylan Windom and Paulina Los rose to the challenge, defeating the Maverick duo of Angeles De los Rios and Astrid Gehre, 8-3. With KU’s second win, the Jayhawks procured the doubles point and the match between Claire Dreyer and Morgan Barnhill and UT-Arlington’s Jessica Birowski and Giada D’ortona was called at 5-3. Kansas claimed the doubles point for the seventh match in a row.

Using their momentum of the doubles win, the Jayhawks came out blazing in singles. In each match, Kansas jumped out in the first game, setting a tone for the competition.  Cardona claimed victory first, defeating D’ortona in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. This gave KU a 2-0 lead over the Mavs. Next up was Los, who blanked Ghre, 6-0 in the first set, but struggled in the second, narrowly winning, 6-4. Ludueña sealed the win for the Jayhawks with a victory over De los Rios (6-2, 6-4) as the Jayhawks swept the Mavs, 4-0 to extend KU’s streak to 7-0. The two remaining matches were called after KU reached the required four points to win the match.

UP NEXT
Kansas will hit the road to meet Eastern Kentucky (Feb. 21) and Kentucky (Feb. 22). This will be the Jayhawks’ first weekend without a match at home.
