LEXINGTON, Ky. – After going unbeaten in its first eight matches of the season, No. 60 Kansas women’s tennis couldn’t hold off the No. 39 Kentucky Wildcats, falling 4-0 in the Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex Saturday afternoon. The Jayhawks’ opening run ties them for the second longest opening win streak since the program’s first season in 1977.

Kentucky (10-2, 0-0 SEC) extends its series lead over Kansas (8-1, 0-0 Big 12) to 3-1.

“We ran into a really good team today that played really well,” said head coach Todd Chapman.

Kansas came out blazing to begin the doubles competition, jumping out in front on each court as KU won the first game on all three courts. Claire Dreyer and Morgan Barnhill were the first to grab a win for the Jayhawks, defeating Kirsten Lewis and Edmée Morin-Kougoucheff, 8-3 on court three. On the first two courts, the Wildcats proved too much for the Jayhawks as the lead slipped away from KU on each court. In the tiebreaker, Dylan Windom and Paulina Los couldn’t fend off the Wildcat duo of CeCe Witten and Caitlin Mcgraw (8-7) and Maria Jose Cardona and Maria Belen Ludueña fell to Aldila Sutjiadi and Kelsey Dieters (8-7). This was the first time this season that Kansas surrendered the doubles point.

“We lost a really tough doubles point that we should have won,” said Chapman. “Kentucky took the momentum from us and ran with it.”

Kentucky took the momentum from the doubles competition straight into singles. Right away, the UK asserted dominance on its home courts. Limited to only four indoor courts, Kentucky stepped up on the first three courts, while Paulina Los went back and forth with Lewis on court four. Luduena was the first to fall at the hands of Dieters on the third court (6-2, 6-1) followed by No. 56- Ravita who rolled past Cardona, 6-2, 6-1. With two wins with singles, Kentucky only needed one more singles victory to claim victory. On court two, Sutjiadi gave the Wildcats what they needed, downing Windom, 6-2, 6-1. With the completion of court two, the match was called and Kentucky walked off its home courts with a win, handing KU its first loss of the 2013-14 season.

“The girls had a tough time responding emotionally after the doubles,” said Chapman. “I liked out effort today, especially in doubles. We have to learn from our mistakes today and start getting ready for a really good Wichita State team.”

The Jayhawks will continue their 2013-14 season back on their home turf with a match against No. 38 Wichita State on Feb. 28 at 3 p.m., in the Jayhawk Tennis Center.
