ORLANDO, Fla. – Seniors Alex Jones and Taylor Hatfield and sophomore Chaley Brickey each belted a pair of base hits, but Kansas once again lacked the opportunistic RBI raps and stranded 12 runners on base in a 5-1 loss to South Dakota in the sixth and final game of the first day of the UCF Knights Invitational Friday night.
The loss dropped Kansas to 0-2 on the season, while South Dakota improved to 2-0. In the two games combined, KU left 19 runners on base, while the Jayhawk pitchers only allowed a total of four hits on the day.
After Kansas left two runners stranded in the top of the first, South Dakota scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the frame when Yvon Minogue singled home Lindsey Boyd off KU starter Alicia Pille.
Pille settled down and retired eight-straight Coyotes, before walking the first two batters in the bottom of the fourth and giving up a double down the left field line to Morgan Hancock to put South Dakota up 3-0. Jones took over the circle for the Jayhawks in relief after Hancock’s double and stopped the Coyote scoring run.
KU’s Harli Ridling led off the fifth inning with a double over the centerfielder’s head. After being moved to third on an infield out, Ridling plated the first Jayhawk run of the 2014 season when Hatfield dropped a single just over first base down the line.
The Jayhawks were not able to get any closer, as USD’s Hancock stroked another RBI double down the left field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth to give the Coyotes a 5-1 edge.
Pille took the loss after allowing two hits and three earned runs over three innings. She also walked three, while striking out five. Rachel Cue earned the complete-game win for the Coyotes and struck out two.
The Jayhawks will be back in action Saturday, when Kansas faces LIU-Brooklyn at 10 a.m. CT, and Fordham at 2:30 p.m. CT.
