LAWRENCE, Kan. – In a match that weathered winds, chill temperatures and intermittent rain, No. 23 Oklahoma State women’s tennis routed No. 47 Kansas, 7-0, at the Jayhawk Tennis Center Friday afternoon. The match marked KU’s first conference loss this season.

“Against really good teams, you have to have confidence in the pressure moment,” said first-year head coach Todd Chapman.  “I feel like the most confident team won those points today, and that was Oklahoma State. That’s part of the growing process of the team.”

The Jayhawks (11-5, 2-1) and Cowgirls (9-5, 3-0) tested their mental toughness against the elements in a four and a half hour match at the center’s outdoor courts. OSU’s victory pushes the program’s all-time series lead over Kansas to 27-16.

Kansas and Oklahoma State squared off first in doubles. The Cowgirls jumped out ahead on all three courts as the Jayhawks tried to hold on. On the third court, the freshmen duo of Caroline Henderson and Morgan Barnhill collected four games off OSU’s Katarina Adamovic and Karen Guttormsen before falling first, 8-4.

With Oklahoma State needing one more win to claim the point, the 65th-ranked tandem of Viktoria Lushkova and Kanyapat Narattana downed KU’s Maria Jose Cardona and Maria Belen Ludueña, 8-3. The Jayhawk duo’s loss ended their five-match winning streak.

Court two continued as Paulina Los and Dylan Windom traded games with Carla Tur Mari and Maria Alvarez. But, the Cowgirl duo put a freeze on the Jayhawks, pulling ahead to win, 8-6.

OSU’s doubles victory was the first time the Jayhawks have been swept in the doubles competition.

With a 1-0 lead over Kansas, Oklahoma State came out winning the first game on a majority of the six singles courts. But, after a few minutes of game time, the officials suspended the game due to rain.

The two teams rested and tried to stay warm for ten minutes before the match resumed when the officials decided the sudden shower had subsided.

On court two, Cardona struggled in her match-up against Oklahoma State’s Megan McCray. The Cowgirl only allowed Cardona two games total in her 6-1, 6-1 win.

Another streak fell on court four, as Los was defeated by Adamovic. Los’ loss ended her ten-match winning streak but the Jayhawk maintains a 13-2 record in dual play.

With a 3-0 lead, the Pokes only needed one more win to maintain their perfect Big 12 record. OSU’s needed victory came from court five, where Carla Tur Mari topped KU sophomore Anastasija Trubica, 6-1, 7-5.

While Oklahoma State secured the dual match, one win appeared not as certain. One court one, No. 54 Lushkova battled Windom, winning the first set easily, 6-3. Windom returned to the second set with determination, pulling out ahead of the Oklahoma State freshman, 3-0. Lushkova responded, but was unable to derail Windom, as the KU senior grabbed the second set pushing the match into a tiebreaker. Lushkova, who has has lost one match since joining OSU in the spring, managed to pull ahead of Windom in the tiebreaker, 6-0. Windom attempted a comeback, but Lushkova made her final push, winning the tiebreaker 10-4.

Oklahoma State’s final two wins came from court three and six, where Narattana defeated Ludueña, 6-4-6-2, and Guttormsen defeated Barnhill, 7-6, 7-5.

“When you work hard to set something up, or earn opportunities in a match you have to have the confidence to win the match and finish things off,” said Chapman. “That’s just where we are right now as a team and we have to get better at it. The positive is we have another opportunity against a really good team on Sunday to show growth.”

The Cowgirls maintain their perfect conference record as Kansas drops to 2-1.
