Lady Raiders Rout Jayhawks, 7-0

LUBBOCK, Texas – 65th-ranked Kansas women’s tennis suffered a 7-0 setback against the No. 34 Texas Tech Lady Raiders Friday evening at the McLeod Tennis Center.
KU’s only win of the evening came from No. 1 doubles where seniors Paulina Los and Dylan Windom defeated Texas Tech’s 47th-ranked Samantha Adams and Kenna Kilgo, 8-6, for their first ranked win of the season.
Texas Tech’s (15-7, 5-3 Big 12) win edges the Lady Raiders all-time series lead over Kansas (11-9, 2-5 Big 12) to 13-9.
The Lady Raiders came out swinging in the doubles competition as Lynn Kiro and B. Machado Santos blanked Kansas’ freshman duo Morgan Barnhill and Caroline Henderson, 8-0.
To give Kansas a winning chance, Windom and Los topped Kilgo and Adams on the first doubles court. But Texas Tech’s Nikki Sanders and Rashmi Teltumbde grabbed the victory at court two over Maria Jose Cardona and Maria Belen Ludueña (8-4) to give the Lady Raiders the early edge.
The momentum didn’t stop for Tech. Sanders defeated Los at No. 4 singles in convincing fashion, 6-2, 6-0, and B. Machado Santos bested Anastasija Trubica, 6-1, 6-3 on the sixth court.
With a 3-0 lead, the Lady Raiders only needed one more win to clinch their fifth Big 12 match of the season. Kiro answered the call, topping Ludueña at No. 3 singles,6-2, 6-2, to give Tech the victory.
As the match continued, Cardona was topped by Teltumbbde on the second court, 6-2, 7-5 and Windom fell to Kenna Kilgo, 7-5, 7-6 (7-2). To seal TTU’s sweeping victory, Adams defeated Barnhill in a third set, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
With the win, Texas Tech pushes its record to 15-7, 5-3 Big 12 and Kansas drops to 11-9, 2-5 Big 12. The match represents KU’s fifth ranked opponent and loss in a row.
Up next, Kansas travels to Fort Worth, Texas to take on the No. 54 TCU Horned Frogs at the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center at 10 a.m., on April 13. The Jayhawks will close out the regular Big 12 season when they travel to Manhattan, Kansas, for the Sunflower Showdown against No. 71 Kansas State on April 19 at noon.
