MANHATTAN, Kan. – To conclude the Jayhawks’ regular Big 12 season, the Kansas State Wildcats handed KU a 6-1 loss at the Mike Goss Tennis Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Kansas (11-11, 2-7 Big 12)  sophomore Maria Jose Cardona made quick work of Palma Juhasz at No. 2 singles, but her win was the only singles victory for the Jayhawks on the day. After claiming the doubles point, K-State (9-12, 3-6 Big 12) collected five wins in singles to clinch the match.

KSU’s win pushes its series win-streak to six, but Kansas maintains its all-time series lead, 40-13.

The Wildcats opened the doubles competition with an 8-0 win on the first court where KSU’s Petra Niedermayerova and Amina St. Hill blanked KU’s Dylan Windom and Paulina Los.

KSU secured the early lead with a win on the third court, where Livia Cirnu and Maria Panaite downed Kansas freshmen Morgan Barnhill and Caroline Henderson in  a tiebreaker (8-7 [7-3]).

The competition continued on the second court where the duo of Cardona and Maria Belen Ludueña ran past Juhasz and Iva Bago, 8-3, for Kansas’ first of two wins for the day.

Kansas State carried its momentum from the doubles competition into singles. KSU’s 61st-ranked Niedermayerova snagged the Wildcat’s first singles win over Windom on the first court, 6-1, 6-0. Cirnu struck next, downing Barnhill, 6-1, 6-2 to give KSU a 3-0 lead.

Cardona spoiled KSU’s run with a 6-2, 6-1, win over Juhasz at No. 2 singles to make the score, 3-1. But St. Hill sealed the Wildcat win, topping Los on court four, 6-1, 6-2.

In the last two matches, the decision came down to a deciding match tiebreaker. Ludueña grabbed the first set off Panaite on court three, but fell in the next set, pushing the match into a super tiebreaker. In the super, Ludueña and Panaite fought past the typical 10-point tiebreaker until Painaite topped Ludueña, 14-12 (4-6, 6-2, 1-0 [14-12]). On court six, Bago bounced back after losing the first set to take Trubica to a super tiebreaker where Bago came out ahead, 10-3 (6-3, 4-6, 1-0 [10-3]).

Kansas State’s 6-1 win pushed it’s record to 9-12 and the Wilcats breaks the conference tie with KU to finish seventh, while KU places eighth in regular season conference standings.

Up next, Kansas will head south to Fort Worth, Texas, for the Big 12 Women’s Tennis Championship at TCU’s Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center. The seeds will be decided Saturday evening, while match times will be announced Monday, April 21.
