Jayhawks Secure 41 Spots at NCAA West Prelim

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas track & field program learned Thursday afternoon that 35 entries between the men’s and women’s teams have been accepted into the preliminary round of the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships being held May 29-31 in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
 
For the first time since the current NCAA Championship qualifying format was put in place in 2010, John McDonnell Stadium at the University of Arkansas will serve as the host site of the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds next weekend.
 
The other half of the nation will trek to Jacksonville, Florida for the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds being held at Hodges Stadium and hosted by North Florida.
 
The No. 13-ranked KU women feature 18 athletes and a relay earning 23 entries into the meet, while the Jayhawk men boast 15 athletes and two relays earning 18 entries into the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.
 
The NCAA Selection Committee accepted the top-48 performers in each individual event and the top-24 relay teams in both relays to compete at each site hosting the NCAA Preliminary Rounds for a total of 96 individuals and 48 relays competing nationwide.
 
When competing in the NCAA Preliminary Rounds, the top-12 finishers in each open and relay event will qualify for the national semifinal and final rounds of the 2014 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships scheduled to run June 11-14 at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
