STILLWATER, Okla. – Kansas sophomore Yupaporn “Mook” Kawinpakorn fired a 3-under 69 Friday and is currently tied for seventh individually as KU is in 10th place after two rounds at the 2014 Women’s Golf NCAA Central Regional Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Oklahoma.
Kansas shot a 290 (+2) and improved 19 strokes from Thursday’s opening round 309 (+21). With the Jayhawks in 10th place at 599 (+23), Kansas is three strokes behind Mississippi State and Oklahoma State who are tied for eighth at 596 (+20). With the final 18 holes on Saturday, the top eight teams from the NCAA Central Regional will advance to the NCAA Championship, May 20-23, at Tulsa Country Club in Tulsa.
KU’s 290 was the second-lowest round of the tournament among the 24 competing teams. UCLA shot a 289 (+1) Friday and has a two-round 588 (+12) to lead the event. The Bruins have a one shot lead over California at 589 (+13).
“I’m very proud of the effort the team put forth today,” Kansas head coach Erin O’Neil said following Friday’s 290 which was KU’s second-lowest round of the 2013-14 season. “They handled themselves well, made good decisions overall and it was great to see them post a solid round on a tough championship course. Tomorrow we need continue to play the course rather than watch the scoreboard, focus on what is in our control and see how things shake out in the end.”
Mook has led KU both rounds and has a two-round 144 (E). Her 69 on Friday marked the third time in her last five rounds she has recorded a 69 with the two others at the Big 12 Championship (April 26-28). The top two individuals from the central regional not on the eight advancing teams will compete at the NCAA Championship.
“Mook is in a great place with her game right now and seems to thrive in pressure situations,” O’Neil said. “If she sticks to her game plan tomorrow there’s no reason why she can’t earn another top-five finish.”
Kansas junior Minami Levonowich tied her career low with a 72 (E) Friday. Levonowich holed a shot from over 150 yards out giving her an eagle on hole No. 17, the lowest handicapped hole at Karsten Creek. Levonowich, who also had three birdies Friday, has a two-round total of 149 (+5) as she is tied for 33rd in the 124-golfer field.
Freshman Pornvipa “Faii” Sakdee added her card to the Jayhawk total as she shot a 75 (+3) Friday behind a back nine 1-over par and a front nine 2-over par. Faii currently sits in a tie for 50th at 152 (+8)
Senior Thanuttra “Fhong” Boonraksasat found her stroke Friday as she carded three birdies on her way to a 2-over par 74. Fhong is in a tied for 73rd with a two round 155 (+11).
Rounding out the Jayhawk squad is senior Meghan Potee who carded a second round 79 (+2), improving from the first round by one stroke. Potee is in a tie for 91st with a total score of 159 (+15).
The NCAA Central Regional will conclude with 18 final holes Saturday, May 10.
