KU’s Hanna Qualifies for 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s golfer Chase Hanna shot a two-round 142 (-2) at Swope Memorial Golf Course in Kansas City, Missouri, on  June 17 to qualify for the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links (APL) Championship.

Hanna, a sophomore-to-be from Leawood, Kansas, finished second behind Michael Greene (-6) in the 25-golfer field at Swope Memorial. Greene was the automatic qualifier for the APL Championship, while Hanna was selected as an alternate to join the field. The 89th APL Championship will be hosted at the Sand Creek Station Golf Course in Newton, Kansas, July 14-19.

After shooting a 4-over par 76 in his morning round, Hanna entered the afternoon tied for 12th. He then carded seven birdies en route to a tournament-best 18 holes 66 (-6).

Hanna will be one of 156 competing at the APL Championship. There will be two rounds of stroke-play qualifying, July 14-15, and the field will be cut to 64 golfers with the lowest scores for match play. Sand Creek Station Golf Course, a par-71course, will mark the final playing of the U.S. APL Championship, as the USGA plans to retire the competition.

Hanna is coming off of an outstanding freshman season at Kansas. He led the Jayhawks in scoring in seven of his 11 events and posted a season scoring average of 73.24 per round in 2013-14. Hanna had two top-10 finishes, with his best being tied for fifth place at the Badger Invitational in October 2013.
