FORT COLLINS, Colo. – Kansas men’s golf junior Ben Welle shot a first-round 69 (-1) and a second round 70 (E) on day one at the Ram Masters Invitational at the Fort Collins Country Club  Monday. Kansas has two players, Welle and sophomore Chase Hanna, in the top-10 as entering Tuesday’s final round.

“We played fairly solid as the course was playing hard and firm,” said KU third year head coach Jamie Bermel. “We played really well in the last eight holes.”

Welle led the team by carding two birdies in the first round and four birdies in second round to shoot a day one score 139 (-1). He will enter the final 18 holes in second, behind Drew McCullough of Wyoming, after two rounds.

“Ben Welle had a very good day,” Bermel said. “Chase Hanna had a 68 in the second round with three birdies on the last four holes.”

Hanna shot a first round 75 (+5) and finished strong five birdies in the second round shooting 68 (-2). His day one score of 143 places him tied for eighth entering Tuesday’s final round.

KU junior Connor Peck shot a 73-74—147 (+7) and is tied for 29th in the 84-golfer field. Freshman Daniel Hudson shot a 75-74—149 (+9) and is tied for 42nd, while redshirt senior Bryce Brown shot 73-77—150 (+10) and is tied for 45th. Freshman Spencer Painton, who is playing as an individual, shot a 71-75—146 (+6) and is tied for 20th.

Kansas is tied for third with McNeese State at 16-over, one shot behind Denver at 15-over and five behind host Colorado State 10-over.

“We are in the last group on Tuesday so it should be a lot of fun,” Bermel said.
