Former KU Golfer Chris Thompson Wins Wells Fargo Nebraska Open

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Former Kansas men’s golfer Chris Thompson won the Wells Fargo Nebraska Open by shooting a three-round 196 (-17) at Elks Country Club in Columbus, Nebraska, September 12-14. 

Thompson, a KU All-American in 1998 and 1999 who calls Lawrence home, has finished second in five of his last six tournaments. Thompson shot a 7-under 64, including nine birdies, to build a one-stroke lead after the first round on Friday. He then shot a second round 5-under 66 with six birdies to head into the final round with a five-stroke lead in the 62-golfer field. On Sunday, Thompson finished with a 5-under 66 to finish 17-under and beat runner-up Grant Doverspike by three strokes.

Another KU two-time All-American (1999 and 2000), Ryan Vermeer, finished tied for seventh in the event with a three-round 206 (-7). He shot a first round 67 (-4) with five birdies, a second round 68 (-3) and a final round 71 (E).

The Wells Fargo Nebraska Open raised $1.2 million in scholarships for the Nebraska Community College Foundation to help students attending several community colleges across Nebraska.
