MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – For the second week in a row, the Kansas women’s golf team finished in the top three after placing third and shooting an overall team score of 905 (+41) at the Minnesota Invitational at the Minikahda Club here Tuesday.
KU senior Gabriella DiMarco led the way for the Jayhawks overall by finishing tied for sixth, her best career placing. DiMarco shot a 76 (+4) Tuesday and carded a three-round 221 (+5) for the event.
“I got a good feeling for my swing” DiMarco said. “Coach Katy (Nahm) has worked with me a lot over the last nine months going through a huge swing change, switching everything up to make it more consistent, so I didn’t have big misses. I can help the team out more and give them some good scores. (Like Minikahda) I grew up playing on a bent grass course, so I was able to get up and down a lot and hit a lot of good putts. It felt like a home course advantage because I grew up on a course like this.”
Last week, the Jayhawks finished second at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational where they had the lead heading into the final day but was not able to hold on to it. This week, the Jayhawks were able to move up a spot on the final day of the Minnesota Invitational as junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn led the way Tuesday carding a 73 (+1), placing tied for 28th in the 75-golfer field with an overall score of 229 (+13). Sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee tied Kawinpakorn with a 229, which included a 75 on Tuesday.
As a team, KU entered the day fourth and passed GRU-Augusta for third place in the 14-team field. The Jayhawks shot their best round of the tourney, 300 (+12), and finished five strokes behind Colorado’s 900 (+36) and 26 behind tournament winner East Carolina’s 879 (+15).
“It was a great day.” KU head coach Erin O’Neil said. “We got off to a little of a rough start early, but bounced back, hung in there, finished strong and we were able to move up to third, which is great. Everybody contributed each day and really hung in there. We kept our heads on straight and Gabby had a great tournament. Mook (Kawinpakorn) bounced back today, which is good, and Michelle (Woods) played steady for us. It was just across the board a good tournament. We are optimistic heading into the rest of the fall season.”
Senior Michelle Woods concluded her final round with a 76 (+4) and tied for 37th with a 231 (+15) and freshman Kallie Gonzales shot an 85 (+13) to finish tied for 67th with a three-round score of 243 (+27). East Carolina’s Frida Gustafsson Spang won the tourney finishing with a 207 (-9), eight strokes ahead of Minnesota’s Anna Laorr who was second with a 215 (-1).
The Jayhawks will continue their season as they travel to Greenville, South Carolina, next week for the Lady Paladin Invitational September 21-23.
