ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Behind top-10 finishes from juniors Connor Peck and Ben Welle, the Kansas men’s golf team opened the 2014-15 season finishing third at the Wolverine Intercollegiate at the U-M Golf Course, here Sunday. The Jayhawks shot an even-par 281 in their final round.
 
The Jayhawks ended the tournament with a three-round 856 (+4) and were led by Peck, who tied for seventh, and Welle, who tied for ninth. Senior Bryce Brown led the individuals in the 66-golfer field, tying Welle for ninth place.
 
“We played better today, but not quite good enough to finish second,” KU head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Connor Peck and Ben Welle played well. Bryce Brown played as an individual and also played real solid.”
 
Peck led KU with six birdies on Sunday to shoot a 68 (-3), finishing with a 69-75-68—212 (-1). Peck’s seventh-place finish gives him his second career top-10 finish as a Jayhawk.
 
Welle shot a 70 (-1) with a four birdies Sunday and finished at even par with a 72-71-70—213 (E). Welle has three career top-10 finishes as a Jayhawk. Brown carded a third round 70 (-1) and tied Welle for ninth. He shot a tournament score 71-72-70—213 (E).
 
Senior Logan Philley had a final round 72 (+1) and finished tied for 23rd with a 76-69-72—217 (+4). Sophomore Chase Hanna tied for 32nd with a final round 71 (E) and a tournament score of 71-78-71—220 (+7). Freshman Brock Drogosch tied for 42nd with a third-round 74 (+3). He ended the event +9 (76-72-74—222).
 
Michigan won the event with a final round 287 (+3) and a three-round 278-280-287—845 (-7). Penn State finished second with a tournament score 289-287-279—855 (+3). Michigan’s Kyle Mueller won the individual title shooting a 2-under 69 Sunday and a three-round 206 (-7), one shot ahead of San Jose State’s Cody Blick’s 207 (-6).
 
“I hope we can tighten up a few things this week before we head to Colorado,” Bermel said.
 
The Jayhawks will travel to Fort Collins, Colorado, on September 16-17, to play in the Ram Masters Invitational, where they finished eighth last season.
