Stein to Represent Kansas, Big 12 at NCAA Convention
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas senior Maddie Stein is one of three Big 12 student-athletes selected by the commissioner of the Big 12 conference to represent the Jayhawks and the league at the 2015 NCAA Convention in Washington, D.C.
A utility player for KU softball, Stein will take part in the NCAA Convention Jan. 15-18 along with Ty Darlington from Oklahoma and Texas Tech’s Anthony Lyons. Stein will have a vote on the autonomy legislative proposals that will be presented during the autonomy voting session at the convention.
“What a great honor for Maddie to be able to represent the Big 12 at the NCAA Convention,” Kansas softball coach Megan Smith said. “Maddie is a great example of a student-athlete who has done really well on and off the field. She has served as a leader on our team for the last three seasons and I know she will do a good job representing our university.”
The current NCAA Division I governance structure, adopted in August 2014, provides autonomy to the High Visibility Conferences (Big 12, ACC, Big Ten, Pac-12, SEC) to adopt rules in a set of specific areas and ensures that student-athletes have the ability to vote in the decision-making process. Autonomous legislation is designed to allow permissive use of resources or to otherwise enhance the well-being of student-athletes by any member, to advance the educational or athletics-related needs of student-athletes.
Under the autonomy process, each institution in those five conferences will have one (1) vote and there will be three (3) student-athlete representatives per conference that also will each have one (1) vote (15 student-athlete votes total). The student-athlete representatives will work alongside university chancellors and presidents, athletics directors, senior woman administrators, faculty athletics representatives and athletics administrators during the autonomy discussion and business sessions.
Stein, a native of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, is a two-time captain for the Jayhawks. She started every game in 2014, while hitting .358 with 13 doubles, a triple, a home run and 40 RBIs. Stein’s list of achievements during her junior campaign included NFCA All-American Scholar Athlete honors, Academic All-Big 12 and All-Big 12 Defensive Team honors.
Stein and the Jayhawks open the 2015 season with LIU-Brooklyn at the Florida Atlantic Tournament on Feb. 6, the first of 25 road games before opening the home portion of the schedule against Northern Colorado in the Jayhawk Invitational March 13. All Kansas home games are played at the new Arrocha Ballpark at Rock Chalk Park. Season and single game ticket information, as well as promotions, will be released soon.
