Kansas Swimming and Diving Gets Students Excited for Season Opener

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas swimming and diving’s excitement for the 2015-16 season – which starts officially this weekend at Robinson Natatorium – is bubbling internally and spilled over into the courtyard outside Mrs. E’s Cafeteria on Daisy HIll Wednesday evening. Members of the squad interacted with students outside Mrs. E’s, one of the university’s dining halls, encouraging them to come out and support the Jayhawks in the season opener against Missouri State and Denver.

Along with handing out promotional flyers, the team gave away free Jayhawk key chains, stickers and this year’s swimming and diving poster.

“Tonight we had a great time hanging out with students and promoting our meet,” junior breaststroker Gretchen Pocisk said. “We haven’t ever done anything like this and I think it will help get a lot of fans to come. We’re really excited for our season and I feel like everyone that walked past Mrs. E’s today figured that out.”

The Jayhawks will open their season friday with a double dual against the Bears and Pioneers at the Robinson Center across the lawn from Allen Fieldhouse, a meet that will also feature men’s racing with the Missouri State and Denver men matching up. The first race is scheduled to start Friday at 5 p.m., with Saturday’s contest beginning at noon.

Kansas will wear pink caps all weekend as part of the Jayhawks for a Cure meet. Along with the pink meet, the teams’ four seniors will be recognized before the first events on Saturday. All Jayhawk meets are free and open to the public, but donations to Jayhawks for a Cure, supporting Lawrence Memorial Hospital and the KU Cancer Center, are encouraged this weekend. Pink Poms will be distributed to fans at the door and attendees are welcomed to hang a pink swim flag tribute.
