PALM DESERT, Calif. – Kansas men’s golf team continued it climb up the leaderboard and finished 14th at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club golf course in Desert Palm, California, Sunday. The Jayhawks were tied for 23rd entering Saturday’s second round and 16th prior to Sunday’s final 18 holes.
No. 35 TCU won the tournament shooting a three-round 853 (-11), followed by No. 15 Texas Tech at 856 (-8). Denver finished third shooting a three-round 857 (-7), with Kansas State finishing fourth shooting 872 (+8). KU finished 14th with a three-round total 902 (+38), which included a 302 (+14) on Sunday.
“Overall, I am extremely disappointed with our finish this week,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “The guys weren’t ready to play and I take full responsibility for that and will hopefully get it corrected for next weekend.”
In Sunday’s final round, the Jayhawks were led by senior Logan Philley who had an eagle and four birdies shooting a three-round 81-87-68—236 (+20). Junior Ben Welle led KU for the event finishing tied for 68th with a three-round 77-75-76—228 (+12), one stroke ahead of freshman Daniel Hudson. Hudson finished tied for 72nd shooting 77-73-79—229 (+13).
KU sophomore Chase Hanna and redshirt freshman Brock Drogosch tied for 77th. Hanna carded two birdies on the day, shooting a three-round 76-75-79—230 (+14). Drogosch shot a three-round 75-72-83—230 (+14). Junior Connor Peck, who played as an individual, finished tied for 16th with three birdies in his final round. Peck shot a three-round 77-72-70—219 (+3).
Texas Tech’s Clemet Sordet won the individual title shooting a three-round 205 (-11). TCU’s Paul Barjon placed runner-up, four strokes behind Sordet.
“Logan (Philley) had a great day, 68 in the condition we had today was impressive. Connor (Peck) played well again today and we will get him in the lineup next week,” Bermel said. “We have a lot of work to do and need to have a good week of practice.”
Next, the Jayhawks will travel to Louisiana for the Louisiana Classics Invitational on March 2-3.
