NEW ORLEANS – The Kansas women’s golf team shot a third round score of 316 (+28), placing 12th with a team score of 931 (+67) at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate in New Orleans at the English Turn Golf & Country Club Tuesday.
KU senior Minami Levonowich ended up leading the way for the Jayhawks after 54-holes as she placed tied for 35th in the 81-golfer field with a third-round score of 79 (+7) and 230 (+14) for the tournament. Junior Yupaporn Kawinpakorn finished one stroke behind Levonowich, placing tied for 38th with a 231 (+15). Kawinpakorn ended her last round with a score of 82 (+10).
Jayhawk sophomore Pornvipa Sakdee concluded her third round with a 78 (+6) and 237 (+21) overall for the tournament as she ended up tied for 51st. Senior Gabriella DiMarco had the best round on the day for the Jayhawks with a score of 77 (+5). DiMarco carded a 239 (+5) for the tournament and placed tied for 63rd. Freshman Pitsinee Winyarat shot an 89 (+17) in the third round and a 251 (+35) for the competition as she tied for 79th.
Kansas Coach Erin O’Neil was able to see a few ways that the Jayhawks can improve as the season progresses.
“We didn’t finish well our last four to five holes, we gave away at least nine shots, a lot of which were on putting.” O’Neil said. “The main thing we can do is practice our short game, especially our putting, as much as possible the next two weeks to build up our confidence. This was a very competitive tournament and it was a great opportunity for the team to see there isn’t much that separates us from the teams ranked in the top 25. It’s definitely a good motivator to push ourselves even more to be the best we can be.”
LSU won the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate by 12 strokes with an 874 (+10). Florida and UCLA finished tied for second with an overall score of 886 (+22) and Arizona and Tulane ended up tied for fourth with an 892 (+28). Teammates Madelene Sagstrom and Caroline Nistrup from LSU tied for individual honors with a 212 (-4) for the 54-hole tournament.
The Jayhawks will have a couple of weeks off from competition as they will compete next at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational in Tucson, Arizona, March 16-17.
