LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the first time in its 88-year history, the Kansas Relays will feature a collegiate quadrangular as four teams are set to take part in the scored competition at this year’s meet. Kansas will go head-to-head with in-state rival Kansas State as well as Colorado State and Purdue during the two-day competition that will span 40 men’s and women’s track & field events. The 88th Annual Kansas Relays will take place April 15-18 and will be held for the second year at Rock Chalk Park.

“With the direction track & field is trending across the U.S., and the world today, officials are looking for ways to increase their fan base and make the sport more appealing to the non-track purist,” said meet director Milan Donley. “So we came up with the idea of adding a quadrangular scored meet to this year’s Kansas Relays. There will be a point race and a team champion at the end of the meet. We think this will be a great way to generate more interest around our area – a way for fans to come and see Kansas athletes going head-to-head against other great programs for a team title.”

The format of the quadrangular will be similar to other scored collegiate meets such as the Big 12 Championships and the NCAA Championships. Individuals will earn points based on their finish in their respective events. Only the top-two finishers from each team will be scored in each individual event, and be allowed only one team in the relays. The scoring breakdown will be based on the following table:

Individual Events   Relay Events
1st Place 9 points   1st Place 9 points
2nd Place 7 points   2nd Place 7 points
3rd Place 6 points   3rd Place 6 points
4th Place 5 points   4th Place 5 points
5th Place 4 points
6th Place 3 points
7th Place 2 points
8th Place 1 point

The majority of the quadrangular event finals will take place the afternoon of Saturday, April 18, beginning at 12 p.m., with field events and 1 p.m., with track events. Four quadrangular events will take place prior to April 18. The men’s decathlon and women’s heptathlon will conclude on Thursday, April 16, while the men’s and women’s hammer throws will be held on Friday, April 17. Following the men’s and women’s 4×400-meter relays on Saturday the men’s and women’s team champions will be crowned.

The quadrangular will be run in conjunction with an “Open College” meet as well as the high school division events. The open college division will feature athletes from several other schools as well as those athletes from Kansas, Kansas State, Colorado State and Purdue not competing in the quadrangular. The running event finals of the open college division and the quadrangular will be run consecutively beginning at 1 p.m., on April 18.
