TULSA, Okla. – Behind freshman Daniel Hudson and sophomore Chase Hanna, the Kansas men’s golf team battled hard in the final round at the Big 12 Men’s Golf Championship at Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, as the team finished in eighth place, Wednesday.

Texas won the Big 12 Championship with a four-round 1,130 (+10). The Longhorns shot 281 (+1) in the final round. Texas Tech finished second at 1,154 (+34). Kansas posted a 294 (+14) with a four-round 1,191 (+71) to finish eighth in the nine-team field.

“We were seeded eighth going into the event and finished eighth,” Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel said. “Again, today we made a couple of costly errors and paid the maximum penalty.”

KU’s Hudson and Hanna led the Jayhawks in the final-round as they both shot 73 (+3). Hudson carded two birdies on the final round to shoot a four-round 74-75-76-73—298 (+18) to finish tied for 24th. Hanna shot a four-round 73-77-76-73—299 (+19) and tied for 30th.

Kansas junior Connor Peck and redshirt freshman Jacques Wilson both posted a 74 (+4) in the final-round. Wilson shot a four-round 77-77-77-74—305 (+25), including two birdies on the day to finish tied for 36th. Peck carded four birdies in the final-round as he shot a four-round 79-82-72-74—307 (+27) to finish 40th. Junior Ben Welle led the Jayhawks throughout the championship as he finished 23rd. Welle posted a four-round 74-73-74-77—297 (+17).

“I think we made a lot of progress this year and have everyone coming back next year who played in the Big 12 Championship,” Bermel said.

Texas’ Scottie Scheffler won the individual title shooting a four-round 280 (E). Scheffler’s teammate Gavin Hill finished second with a four-round 282 (+2).

“As for (NCAA) regionals, we were ranked 67 and 68 in two different polls,” Bermel said. “With finishing eighth, I would have to think we may be on the outside looking in as the number is 68 and we may drop a few spots.”

KU can make its first team NCAA Regional appearance since 2007. NCAA Regional selections will be announced Monday, May 4 at 6-8 a.m. CT on The Golf Channel.
