Kansas Offense Erupts in 5-0 Exhibition Win over Drake

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas soccer found its shooting boots as the Jayhawks posted a 5-0 victory over the Drake Bulldogs in its third spring exhibition Friday night at Rock Chalk Park.

“In the second half, our forwards were much more dynamic. Our midfielders were causing a lot more problems and did great pressuring Drake’s backs,” said associate head coach Kelly Miller. “The final ball was so much better in the second half and obviously created a lot more opportunities.”

The Kansas offense attacked from start to finish, with junior forward Ashley Williams putting the Jayhawks on the scoreboard with a tap-in goal just eight minutes into the match. Freshman forward Lois Heuchan tallied the final goal of the night with a left-footed blast from outside the 18-yard box in the 85th minute. Three other Jayhawks found the net in between. Freshman forward Eli Mayr beat her defender on a long run to score the game’s second goal in the 40th minute.

Freshman midfielder Miriam Melugin opened the scoring in the second half when she headed in a cross less than 20 minutes into the period, giving Kansas a commanding 3-0 lead. The fourth score came in the 83rd minute when Heuchan sent a ball across the box that was met with a volley by senior midfielder Jamie Fletcher.

The Jayhawks were once again strong on the defensive end, only allowing six shots on the game and shutting out the Bulldogs, notching their second clean shot in three spring games.

Kansas will now go on the road for their final away game of the exhibition season to face the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes on Saturday, April 18, for a 2 p.m. kickoff.
