KU Alum Gary Woodland Finishes Runner-Up at WGC Cadillac Match Play Championship

SAN FRANSISCO – Former Kansas men’s golfer and PGA professional Gary Woodland finished runner-up behind the No. 1 golfer Rory McIlroy at the World Golf Championship (WGC) – Cadillac Match Play Championship, Sunday, May 3.
 
A Topeka, Kansas, native, Woodland won four-straight matches en route to the championship round where he finished runner-up, with each round decided in 18-hole match play format. Woodland defeated 60th-seed Marc Leishman, 2 and 1, in the first round on Wednesday, April 29. He then proceeded to beat 65h-seed John Senden (5 and 3) in the quarterfinals and 49th-seed Danny Willet (13 and 2) in the semifinals to advance to the finals to face McIlroy.
 
Woodland and McIlroy were all square through first three holes. McIlroy then took control of the match to eventually win 4 and 2.
 
Woodland entered the weekend ranked 43rd in the FedEx ratings with 1,546 points. He is ranked 52nd in the overall world golf rankings.
