Jayhawks Land Second Transfer

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas volleyball team added another key piece to its roster when head coach Ray Bechard announced senior Ashlyn Driskill will join the Jayhawks. Driskill is the second transfer of the offseason and becomes the third member of the senior class heading into the 2015 campaign.
 Ashlyn Driskill graduated
from Wichita State in
2015 and will play her
final season at Kansas.
A native of Valley Center, Kansas, Driskill heads to Lawrence following three seasons at Wichita State. The 6-foot outside hitter appeared in 91 matches for the Shockers, totaling 713 kills and 165 blocks. In her junior year, Driskill started 16 matches for Wichita State, ranked second on the team in kills per set (2.78) and third in total kills (220). Above all, Driskill’s experience and leadership will provide additional support to strengthen the youthful KU roster. She joins four-year Jayhawk Tiana Dockery and Saint Louis transfer Anna Church to comprise the team’s senior class.

“She’s certainly played in a really good program and has plenty of NCAA Tournament experience, even some NCAA Tournament experience against the Jayhawks,” Bechard said. “It’s definitely a unique situation where you get someone who is graduating while still having a year of eligibility left, which appears to be a little more common throughout the country. She has the opportunity to pursue some other things academically and make a solid contribution to the volleyball program.”

Driskill appeared in 26 matches for the Shockers in 2014 and helped them to a 20-10 record. On nine separate occasions she registered double-digit kills, while eclipsing the 20-kill mark twice. During her sophomore season, Driskill saw action in 35 matches and racked up 261 kills, 56 digs and 37 blocks. As a freshman, Driskill tallied 232 kills, 60 digs and 11 service aces, earning her a spot on the Missouri Valley Conference All-Freshman Team.

“I’ve heard nothing but great things about this program and I’m excited to finally be a part of it,” Driskill said. “I waited a few months to get here, so it’s really nice to actually be on campus now.”

The daughter of Shawn and Charlotte Driskill, Ashlyn graduated from WSU in 2015 with a degree in chemistry. She is currently applying to get into the MBA program at Kansas with the objective of going to medical school next.

As Bechard mentioned, Driskill brings plenty of tournament experience with her. In both 2012 and 2013, Driskill appeared in four postseason matches for the Shockers, totaling 31 kills and seven digs, with two of those matches coming against the Jayhawks (a 3-1 WSU victory in 2012, and a 1-3 WSU defeat in 2013).

“Wichita State definitely prepared me for this and it’s nice to be able to continue my volleyball career with what I’ve learned from that program,” Driskill said. “So to come here and get more great coaching at KU, along with my academic goals, this was the perfect fit. I really want to go to KU Med, so I’m hoping this gives me a little bit more of an edge. I’ve also heard that the MBA program is great here and a lot of people that go to med school at Kansas also get their MBA, so it’s nice to be a little ahead of the curve.”

Driskill lettered four years in volleyball at Valley Center High School and was a first team all-state tournament selection in 2009 and 2011. She qualified for the state tournament during her freshman, sophomore and senior seasons, while helping her team to its best finish (third) at the state championship during her senior campaign. Driskill finished her high school career with 1,505 kills, 161 service aces and a .465 hitting percentage.
