Surprise! Jayhawks Deliver Season Tickets to Fans

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Hand-delivering tickets to longtime Kansas volleyball fans was a welcomed break from the grind of preseason camp. The Jayhawks knocked on nearly 30 doors across Lawrence Thursday evening, surprising local season ticket holders and giving them a little bonus insight to the 2015 season.

The Jayhawks even caught fans on the run.In 2014, Kansas broke its record with seven sellouts and missed an eighth sellout by less than 20 people. The Jayhawks routinely rank in the top-30 nationally in attendance, a stat that continues to go up as the team has hosted the NCAA First and Second Rounds in each of the last three years.

Kansas is 41-9 in its last 50 matches at home and the crowd at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center has a big hand in that.

“They certainly do,” head coach Ray Bechard said. “This is our way of reaching out and thanking them for being in the stands and creating that type of environment. That allows us to have a major home court advantage unlike any other we play in, with the exception of TCU which is pretty similar to ours (in size). It’s a unique environment and we have a lot of people to thank for it.”

All 16 Jayhawks and their coaches split into four groups and navigated their way across Lawrence for an evening that proved equally rewarding for the people delivering tickets as those who received them. Dana and Sue Anderson, Bob and Linda Davis, Marlene Mawson and Bill and Carolie Hougland were among some of the homes visited Thursday evening – all of whom have been huge supporters of Kansas volleyball.

Some had stories for the Jayhawks, snacks to share, dogs to pet and advice to give. Although the Jayhawks could only fit a tiny sample of their fan base to their delivery list, they relished the chance to spend time with a few away from Horejsi.

Especially the surprised ones.

“There were some that were expecting us – and some that maybe weren’t,” Bechard laughed. “But it worked out really well.”
