Two-Minute Drill: Substitutions?

“There are no substitutions, get back to the line,” yelled offensive coordinator Rob Likens following a play during team session.

Having heard only that phrase, one could have recognized the mantra for the day; tempo. Drill to drill, play after play, it was all about hustle. It may have looked like organized chaos with everyone sprinting around, and for so many newcomers, it probably was, but one thing is for sure, head coach David Beaty knows speed.

“Today we weren’t the standard,” Beaty said prior to the end of practice. “We control two things; effort and enthusiasm. You are going to bring those two things with you to every practice.”

Perhaps the pace and tempo of practice was hampered by the grass playing surface. Beaty took a page out of the Mark Mangino playbook and had the crew practicing on the grass fields behind Anschutz Pavilion. He had one thought in mind by doing this and that was making the team #EarnIt back to the turf fields and the comfortable confines of the Anderson Family Football Complex.

For some, especially the support staff, the grass wasn’t a big deal. In fact, it felt good on the feet and it was about 20 degrees cooler than if the practice was held on the turf. The cooler field conditions kept the energy levels high and bred a healthy stream of good competition between the ranks.

The quarterbacks handled the procedure well and the wide receivers kept pushing the pace on the outside. It was everything one could expect from the first day of practice. The key element being, keep progressing forward.

“We never want to take a step backward,” Beaty stated following practice. “We need to build upon the progress we made today and make it better tomorrow.”

Although competition was at a high, only one day remains of helmets and shorts before it gets real with shoulder pads Saturday afternoon.
