KANSAS FASTBREAKS

  • Kansas leads the all-time series against Iowa State, 47-32. KU is 16-21 when playing inside Hilton Coliseum.
  • The Jayhawks own a 119-196 all-time record against Big 12 Conference foes.
  • Kansas has a record of 364-404 away from Allen Fieldhouse.
  • In their loss to the No. 6 team in the nation, the Jayhawks held Baylor to nearly 24 points below its season average. Nina Davis, one of the league’s top scorers, was held to her lowest-scoring performance (16 points) in the last six games, and the Lady Bears’ 30-point first half tied for their second-lowest halftime total. Kansas forced the third-most turnovers for Baylor this season (20), while grabbing a season-high 10 steals.
  • The Jayhawks have recorded 30 or more points in the paint on seven different occasions, including a season-high 48 against Oral Roberts (12/22).
  • KU’s bench outscored Oklahoma’s bench, 23-15, on Dec. 30. The Jayhawks’ bench has combined for 20 or more points in a game five times in 2015-16.
  • When Brandon Schneider-coached teams are leading with less than five minutes to play, his overall record is 351-12, and 5-0 at Kansas.
  • Junior forward Caelynn Manning-Allen has swatted away a team-high 23 blocks this season, averaging 1.6 per game. She is on pace to rank among the top-5 blocks for juniors and KU’s top-10 season records. She needs 30 more to crack Kansas’ top-10 season list and 19 to etch her name into the junior record.
  • Freshman guard Jayde Christopher has dished out three or more assists on six occasions, including a career-high mark of six against Northern Illinois (11/27).  She leads the team with 31 assists and turned the ball over just twice in her last four appearances.

ABOUT THE JAYHAWKS
The Jayhawks (5-9, 0-3 Big 12) look to snap a five-game losing streak on the road against Iowa State after coming up short in a home matchup with No. 6 Baylor, 58-40, on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Kansas held the Lady Bears to just 30 points in the first half, tying their second-lowest mark for a halftime score this season. An eight-point deficit stretched to 20 points in the third period, as the Lady Bears found a rhythm and drained 75 percent of their shots. The Jayhawks tightened up their defense in the final quarter, outscoring the visitors 10-8 over the last 10 minutes of action.

In her sixth start of the season, sophomore guard Chayla Cheadle led the squad in scoring with 12 points against the Lady Bears. The Columbia, Missouri native averages 5.1 points per game this season, but her two double-figure scoring performances on the year (17 at SMU, 11/28) have both been team-high marks. Cheadle earned eight trips to the free throw line on Wednesday and connected on seven attempts, after making a combined seven free throws in the previous 13 games this season.

Junior forward Caelynn Manning-Allen and freshman guard Kylee Kopatich tallied the next-highest scores for the Jayhawks, with nine and seven points, respectively. Manning-Allen shot 4-of-10 from the field and gathered three rebounds. Kopatich was the only Kansas player to shoot 50 percent or better, making 3-of-6 attempts in a team-high 31 minutes.

The loss to Baylor, one of the nation’s best squads and the favorite to win the Big 12, provided many defensive bright spots for the young Jayhawks to build on. Kansas held the Lady Bears to nearly 24 points below their season average (81.9) and the game’s leading scorer, junior forward Nina Davis, to 16 points, her lowest scoring performance in the last six games. Baylor also committed its third-most turnovers of the season with 20, while Kansas grabbed a season-high 10 steals.

SCOUTING THE CYCLONES
Iowa State is 10-4 on the season, and 2-1 in the Big 12 after being handed its first conference loss of the year against No. 4 Texas at home on Wednesday evening by a score of 54-75. The Cyclones were riding an eight-game winning streak before the matchup with the Longhorns. Junior guard Seanna Johnson logged 23 points, her fifth 20-point performance of the season, but it was not enough to take down the Big 12 leaders. Iowa State enters Saturday’s contest with a 32-47 all-time record against the Jayhawks, but a 20-16 record in Ames.

The Cyclones are picked to finish fourth in the Big 12 by the coaches’ preseason poll, after a fifth-place finish and trip to the NCAA Tournament last season. Iowa State earned a No. 10 seed, and fell in the first round to seventh-seed Dayton by a score of 66-78. Nine players return from last year’s squad and a three-player freshman class includes a top-50 prospect, Minnesota’s top recruit and Canada’s top prospect.

Johnson is one of only two conference players to currently average a double-double. The Big 12’s leading rebounder last season, Johnson is posting 17.4 points and a conference-best 10.3 rebounds per game. The bulk of the Iowa State offense runs through Johnson, who leads the Cyclones in field goal attempts, field goals made, free throw attempts and free throws made.

Freshman guard Bridget Carleton is behind Johnson with 13.1 points per contest, helping the Cyclones to the fourth-best scoring offense in the Big 12. The top recruit out of Canada is living up to expectations, with the best scoring average in the conference among freshmen.

THIS DAY IN KU WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HISTORY
Record on Jan. 9: 5-10
Kansas women’s basketball will play on the 9th day of January for the 10th time in program history. The first meeting on Jan. 9 was in 1976 against Tarkio, while the last was against Kansas State in 2010. In 1991, a combined 41 points from Terrilyn Johnson and Misti Chennault was too much for Oklahoma. KU defeated the Sooners, 81-64. Johnson added 14 rebounds and the Jayhawks combined for 18 steals.

UP NEXT
Kansas returns home to Allen Fieldhouse to host its third nationally-ranked foe in the last five games, when the Jayhawks welcome No. 4 Texas on Wednesday, Jan. 13, to Lawrence. Tipoff is slated for 7 p.m., on the Jayhawk Television Network and the Jayhawk Radio Network.
