LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas track & field teams will kick off the outdoor portion of the 2016 campaign at meets across the country this weekend. The Jayhawks will send squads to the Texas Relays, to run from March 31-April 2, the Stanford Invitational on April 1, the San Francisco State Distance Carnival on April 1 and the Emporia State Relays on April 2.
JAYHAWK RELAY SQUADS LOOKING FOR SOLID WEEKEND IN AUSTIN
The Kansas men and women will see 29 journey to the 89th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays to be held inside Mike A. Myers Stadium March 31-April 2. The Jayhawks are slated to compete in nine relay events on the men’s and women’s side as well as a handful of other open events. The KU runners will look to continue their successful ways at the meet in Austin.Three active school relay records have been broken at the Texas Relays.
The Jayhawks will also have three pole vaulters in action. Juniors Jake Albright, Nick Maestretti and Nick Meyer are slated to compete in the Kansas jersey for the first time in 2016 after utilizing redshirts during indoor season. Albright and Meyer are both coming off 2015 outdoor seasons that saw them vault to second team All-America honors. The Jayhawk trio will hit the runway for the B-Section pole vault on Thursday at 2:30 p.m.
KU DISTANCE CREW TREKING TO THE WEST COAST
Nine Jayhawks are set to journey to the west coast for a pair of meets that will feature some of the top distance runners in the nation. San Francisco State will host a distance carnival on Friday beginning at 8:30 a.m. (PT). Kansas will see five compete in San Francisco, four of whom are entered in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Kansas will then journey to Palo Alto for the Stanford Invitational on Friday night. The Jayhawks will see sophomore Sharon Lokedi in action in the 10,000 meters. She earned first team All-American honors in both the cross country and indoor track seasons this season. The sophomore will have another school record in her sights as she aims to take down Karen Fitz’s 37-year-old Kansas 10K record of 34:27.3.
Senior Evan Landes will also have a career performance in mind when he toes the 10,000-meter start line at Stanford. Two of the four fastest 10K times in KU history have come at the Stanford Invite, including Jacob Morgan’s 29:02.13 at the event last season, which ranks second on KU’s all-time list.
FIFTY JAYHAWKS PREPPING FOR SATURDAY ACTION IN EMPORIA
Half of the KU men’s and women’s rosters will make the 90-minute trip south to Emporia, Kansas for the Emporia State Relays on Saturday, April 2. Each event area will be represented with a strong contingent of throwers set to compete at Fran Welch Stadium.
Two weeks removed from claiming a third-place finish and first team All-America status in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships, senior Daina Levy is slated to open her final collegiate outdoor season Saturday in the discus throw. Levy qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the event last season, where she went on to post a 19th-place finish. The women’s discus will follow the men’s event, which is scheduled to begin at noon.
Speaking of the men’s discus, Kansas will have a pair of all-conference performers in action as junior Mitch Cooper and sophomore Nicolai Ceban are entered in the event. Cooper earned second team All-America status in the event last season, while Ceban was an honorable mention All-American. Both rank among the all-time top-10 Kansas discus throwers.
Track events are scheduled to kick off at 1 p.m., with the men’s and women’s 3,000 meters and close out at 8:10 p.m. with the running of the 4×400-meter relays.

Kansas will hit the road once again when it journeys to Tempe, Arizona for a pair of meets April 8-9. The Jayhawks will begin the weekend at the Mesa Classic hosted by Mesa Community College on Friday, April 8 before taking part in the Sun Angel Classic hosted by Arizona State on Saturday, April 9.
