KU Men’s Golf Headed to Alabama for NCAA Regional
LAWRENCE, Kan. – Following a season that consisted of four program victories and nine top-five finishes, the Kansas men’s golf team is heading to the NCAA Regionals, May 16-18, the NCAA announced Thursday. The Jayhawks were named an at-large selection and will be the seventh seed in the Alabama Regional in Tuscaloosa.
Competing with Kansas in the Alabama Regional are 12 other teams including: Georgia, Auburn, South Carolina, Alabama, UNLV, Kentucky, Charleston, Lipscomb, Charleston Southern, Colorado, Harvard and Southern Illinois. The opening round of NCAA Regional play begins on May 16, with the three-round event taking place through May 18. The Alabama Regional will be played at Ol’ Colony Golf Complex in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
“Obviously we’re excited,” KU head coach Jamie Bermel said. “You never know which draw you’re going to get and Alabama is perfectly fine with us. The good news is that we’re playing, so we’re certainly excited about that.”
This is 18th time in program history that the Jayhawks have competed in an NCAA Regional, with their last appearance coming in 2007. In order to advance to the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Oregon, Kansas will have to finish amongst the top-five in their region. Historically, the Jayhawks have made a total of 22 NCAA team appearances, which includes pre-regional play. The team’s highest finish came back in 1996 when KU finished tied for third.
For Bermel this marks the 16th time in his coaching career that he has appeared in the NCAA field and his first since the 2012 season while at Colorado State. In 2011, Bermel’s Colorado State team advanced to the NCAA Championship, where the team finished 30th.
