Kansas women’s golf travels to Briar’s Creek Invitational for spring break

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas will start its spring break at John’s Island, South Carolina, at the Briar’s Creek Invitational, as the two-day event runs from March 19-20. The tournament will be played with two rounds played on Monday.

“The most important thing there is for us to do is to hit it off the tee well,” said head coach Erin O’Neil. “If we do that then we should be in pretty good shape. There are a fair bit of hazards and bunkers, but if we can keep it in play off the tee then it should be okay.”

After two weeks off, the Jayhawks have been hard at work fixing some mechanical issues after a disappointing final round at the Westbrook Invitational.

“We looked at our stats and saw that we really needed to work on our short putts and chipping so we’ve been working a lot on that and then checking in on our full swings and our mechanics and getting those fine-tuned a little bit more as well,” said O’Neil. “Hopefully we are feeling confident going into the next two tournaments.”

Chomchana Phuchanbanchob had an impressive last tournament shooting a career-low 54-hole total (214) and recording the first round in the 60’s for any Jayhawk this season. Phuchanbanchob will lead the Jayhawks in the first position.

Xinyun Yu will be in the second position after also shooting a career-low 54-hole total (218) at the Westbrook Invitational.

Following Yu is Junior Ariadna Fonseca Diaz, who was the Jayhawks top finisher at the 2017 Briar’s Creek Invitational. Sophomore Yi-Tsen Chou will follow in the fourth position.

Freshman Sera Tadokoro will make her spring season debut at Briar’s Creek after competing in all four fall events. Senior Kallie Gonzales will compete as an individual in the event.

Kansas will compete against 14 other teams in host College of Charleston, Boston College, Campbell, Charleston Southern, East Carolina, Georgetown, Illinois, Maryland, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Penn State, South Florida, Texas Tech and UNC Asheville.

The sixth annual Briar’s Creek Invitational will be held at The Golf Club at Briar’s Creek, a 6,101-yard par-72 course.
