No. 30 KU heads to California for Bighorn Invitational

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After a short turnaround from Tuesday’s fourth-place finish at the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, the Kansas men’s golf team will head to Palm Desert, California, for the Bighorn Invitational. The two-day event features a 12-team field, and will take place at the Bighorn Golf Club.

“It’s a pretty solid field,” said Kansas head coach Jamie Bermel. “We’re going to need to play really well.”

Of the 12 teams in the field, only two are ranked higher than the No. 30 Kansas Jayhawks — No. 29 BYU and No. 20 Illinois.

Bermel will play the same lineup he has relied on for the past two events. Sophomore Andy Spencer will lead the way, followed by junior Charlie Hillier and a pair of seniors in Daniel Sutton and Daniel Hudson. Freshman Harry Hillier will play in the fifth and final spot, while junior Jake Scarrow will compete as an individual.

The Jayhawks are coming off their fourth-consecutive top-5 finish on the season, upping their season total to six top-5 appearances in just eight events. Should Bermel’s squad up its top-5 streak to five-consecutive events, it will tie the longest top-5-appearance streak of his coaching career.

“I think we need to feed off of our third-round performance in San Antonio,” said Bermel. “Hopefully we can continue to build off of that mindset.”

Friday’s first and second round action begins at 10 a.m. CT, with live scoring available at Golfstat.com.
