Dudarev breaks hammer throw record in season debut

TEMPE, Ariz. – Four throws into his sophomore season, Gleb Dudarev broke his own school record in the hammer throw, going for a mark of 74.35 meters (243-11 ft.) at the Sun Angel Classic in Tempe, Arizona on Friday.

The Vitebsk, Belarus native wasn’t afraid of a sophomore slump and broke out a throw of 72.33 (237-3 ft.) on his first attempt of the day, which would have been a school record if not for his own efforts his freshman season. Taking an early lead in the premiere section of the event at Sun Angel Stadium with his first mark, Dudarev never relinquished the lead and after fouling on his second attempt, the sophomore bettered his mark with a throw of 72.43m (237-7 ft.).

After getting warmed up with his first three throws, the 2017 Big 12 Champion and First Team All-American wound up and unleashed his school record heave, surpassing his previous best by 15 centimeters (six inches). The mark currently places him second in the NCAA, behind only Denzel Comenentia of Georgia (76.29m/250-3 ft.).

Dudarev’s fifth attempt came up just three centimeters shy of his new record at 74.32 meters (243-10 ft.), and when it all was said and done, he had marks that ranked No. 1, 2 and 5 on the KU all-time top-10, a list that only displays the Belarus product’s name.
