KU's Darrell Wyatt Heading To Texas

Jan. 2, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas co-offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Darrell Wyatt is leaving the football program to take a wide receiver position at the University of Texas according to KU head coach Turner Gill. Wyatt will also have the title of co-recruiting coordinator.

Wyatt had two stints at Kansas during his coaching career, serving from 1997-2000 and then in 2010.

“We appreciate everything Darrell has done for Kansas football,” Gill said. “He is an outstanding coach. This is an opportunity for him to get closer to his family and his wife’s family. We hope the best for the entire Wyatt family.”

Wyatt is from Killeen, Texas, while his wife Cindy is from San Antonio, Texas.

“Kansas is a great place and has been a special place for me,” Wyatt said, noting that he has spent a quarter of his coaching career in Lawrence. “Coach Gill and the staff are outstanding and are building something really special here. The opportunity to be close to home and get back to Texas was too much. It is a great deal for me and my family to be close to home.”

Wyatt also said that Gill and other members of the KU staff stressed how much they wanted Wyatt to stay with the Jayhawks.

“Turner made it very obvious that he wanted to keep me here,” Wyatt said. “He and the rest of the staff expressed how much we were wanted here and I really appreciated that.”

This past season Wyatt coached a group of wide receivers, which included Daymond Patterson, who registered a team-best 60 receptions for 487 yards and two touchdowns. Patterson’s 60 catches were the fourth most by a Jayhawk season leader in the last 25 years.

Wyatt started his playing career at TrinityValleyCommunity College before playing two seasons at KansasState, where he earned a degree in sociology in 1989.

His coaching career includes stops at TrinityValley, Sam Houston State, Wyoming, Baylor, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, the Minnesota Vikings, Arizona and Southern Mississippi, in addition to Kansas.

Wyatt and his wife Cindy have two children – son Desmond and daughter Charese.
