Head Coach Bonnie Henrickson Quotes

On the team’s overall performance:

“I thought we did a nice job. I like the confidence that they played with. [Junior] Rebecca Feickert came out and hit big shots today and [senior] Katie Smith always has a great motor and has great energy. I thought defensively we executed the 3-2. No matter what the score, though, it’s about not being sloppy and taking good shots.”

On freshman Aishah Sutherland’s performance:

“I thought she did a nice job. We need her length and athleticism in our league. We have about a six-to-eight minute span at that position that I need filled. She practices well. She needs to show me and have me trust that she’ll do the right thing. I thought her effort was good. She’s lengthy and she can rebound. She’s done some nice things for us and we need some time at that position in our rotation.”

On having a balanced offense:

“Good teams share the ball. Good teams have multiple people that can score. It’s important for Danielle [McCray] to get hers and LaChelda [Jacobs] to get hers. I like for us to get offensive boards and find a way to score there. Obviously we want Danielle to get shots, but after that if you’re open, you can be the go-to guy. If you’re in a position to take a shot that you can make, then this offense works better that way.”

Changes in the starting lineup:

“It’s important in our program and in successful programs that you’re disciplined, committed and have great effort every single day. I thought LaChelda responded today from the other day and Krysten [Boogaard] responded today. It’s about helping this basketball team win, whatever role you have.”

Freshman Aishah Sutherland

On how she can play more minutes:

“It really depends on me to determine how many minutes I’ll get.”

On continuing to play well as a team:

“We need to work hard and do well in practice. We’re doing pretty well. We don’t need to depend on only one person. It’s good to let everyone play and see how it feels to play against people.”

Junior Danielle McCray

On shooting threes in practice:

“We just do position work. We can shoot twos or threes. In our position work we just put some threes in there.”

On how the team can continue to play well in conference games:

“Having the same confidence we have now and taking care of the ball, that’s the only thing that has killed us in conference. When you play these teams we play early, some of them take advantage of your turnovers, but we know the Big 12 is a great conference. Every coach is like your coach. Every coach knows what to take away. When we make a mistake, every team is going to score off of that. Right now when we turnover we get it back, but in the Big 12 it won’t be that easy.”

Junior LaChelda Jacobs

On the play of Danielle McCray:

“Danielle struggled a little bit today, but I think she stayed in the game by going to the offensive glass and getting put-backs. That was good for her. When you’re struggling on offense, go get something off of your defensive game. I think she did that really well today.”

Head Coach Darin Spence

His thoughts on the game:

“Kansas is a good team. We knew coming in here that it was going to be a learning experience. We are a very young team. We weren’t really worried about the final score; we just wanted a good test.”

His thoughts on his team’s nonconference schedule:

“We have played a lot of good teams with a lot of experience. We have played a lot of road games. We have had a lot of tests and now it is just a matter of getting the inside game going with the outside game. We need to be more balanced and defend better. We just need to take the next step, put all of this behind us and get ready for league play.”
