LAWRENCE, Kan. – The Kansas Jayhawks had a quick start out of the blocks for the 2011 campaign, coming back from winter break for a very strong showing in the Bill Easton Classic at Anschutz Pavilion.

The best results for the Jayhawks came in the field events, with senior Jaci Perryman capturing first place in the pole vault with a leap of 3.95 meters (12-10.5 ft). The Jayhawks ended the day with the top six spots in the pole vault.

“I thought the strength for our team today was our pole vaulters, Jaci Perryman especially,” Jayhawk head coach Stanley Redwine said after the meet.

Another great showing for the Crimson and Blue came when senior Elise Umbarger recorded her first career victory in the hammer throw, with a throw of 13.86 meters (45-5.75 ft)

“It’s always good to get a PR so early in the season, especially when we have (the Missouri Dual) coming up next week,” Umbarger said. The other solid performance was from freshman Jessica Maoszek coming in second place overall with a 12.80 meters (42-0.00 ft).

On the men’s side, sophomore Kyle Clemons had one of the best days for the Jayhawks, competing in three races – finishing second in the 60 meters, while taking first overall in the 600 yard and 200 meters.

Without standout sophomore Mason Finley competing, Senior Brian Bishop ran away with his first shot put victory of the young season with a throw of 15.79 meters (51-09.75 ft).

“Overall, I had some pretty solid throws, and technically I thought they were pretty sound, so it was a good meet for me,” Bishop stated.

Overall, the Kansas women took first place in 14 events, while the men did so in 10.

The Jayhawks have a short practice week, they host the Missouri Dual this coming Friday, January 14 at Anschutz Pavilion.
