Kansas Opens 2009 with Dominating 178-78 Victory Over FIU

Kansas (6-2) swimming and diving opened the 2009 calendar year with an impressive, 178-78, victory over the Florida International Golden Panthers Friday evening in Miami. Kansas dropped only one event to FIU and three Jayhawks would win multiple individual events on the night.

KU opened the competition by taking the top three spots in the 200 yard medley relay. KU’s top group, consisting of Iuliia Kuzhil, Danielle Herrmann, Ashley Leidigh and Maria Mayrovich touched the wall in a time of 1:46.90. Kansas’ second-place finishing group, featuring Carrah Haley, Joy Bunting, Jessica Brozek and Amanda Maez finished in a time of 1:51.33.

Kansas’ Emily Lanteigne earned the top spot in the 1000 yard freestyle finishing in a time of 10:15.55. Molly Brammer placed second in a time of 10:37.84.

2008 NCAA Qualifier, Herrmann, lead a trio of Jayhawks in a sweep of the 200 yard freestyle. Herrmann finished in 1:51.31.

Bunting finished first in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:06.38.

In events six and seven, Kansas took the top six spots. Brittany Potter led all swimmers in the 200 yard butterfly in a time of 2:07.53. Mayrovich won the 50 yard freestyle in a time of 24.04. Mayrovich also took the top spot in the 100 yard freestyle, touching the wall in 52.27.

Kansas would go on to win the final events of the competition, but the coaching staff elected to exhibition many of its scores.

Following Saturday’s dual, KU will be back in action at Nebraska on January 17 and at Arkansas on January 22. Kansas’ next home meet will be Jan. 24 against South Dakota and Northern Iowa in a triangular dual.
