Jan. 10, 2005

LAWRENCE, Kan. – University of Kansas soccer player Afton Sauer was named a third team Freshman All-American by SoccerBuzz. The defender joins three other Kansas players honored as All-Americans by SoccerBuzz following the season.

A freshman from Highlands Ranch, Colo., Sauer started all 23 matches on defense for the Jayhawks during the season and was a big part of the team’s defensive success, as KU surrendered only 13 goals all season and finished ninth in the country with a team goals against average of 0.55. In addition to her role on defense, Sauer chipped in two goals offensively, including the game-winner on Oct. 1 against Texas Tech.

The Big 12 Conference honored Sauer with second team All-Conference and All-Freshman team honors following the season and SoccerBuzz named her to the Central Region All-Freshman team.

Earlier in the week, sophomore defender Holly Gault, senior goalkeeper Meghan Miller and junior forward Caroline Smith were selected by SoccerBuzz as All-Americans. Gault was named to the first team, while Miller garnered second team honors and Smith was selected as an honorable mention All-American.
