Jan. 11, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Despite the winter wonderland that arrived in Lawrence earlier this week, the University of Kansas softball team will report to campus Thursday, Jan. 13 as the 2011 season officially gets underway.

All 20 players will meet with the coaching staff Thursday evening for a team meal to welcome everyone back. From there, the players will take part in a short conditioning test with the team’s strength and conditioning coach Molly McKinnon.

Friday the team will meet with counseling and sport psychologist graduate assistant Brett Haskell, who will hold team-building activities. The day will conclude with batting and pitching practice.

On Saturday, Kansas will have its first of six two-a-day practices, scheduled to run until classes resume on Jan. 21.

KU returns 12 letterwinners from its 2010 squad, including its top five offensive threats. Sophomore outfielder Rosie Hull is the team’s top hitter from a year ago, headlining a group of seven returning starters along with All-Big 12 Second Team selection Mariah Montgomery.

The Jayhawks open the 2011 season when they travel to the Jacksonville Tournament Feb. 11-13.
