Jayhawks Rack Up Victories at Illini Invitational

Senior Adrian Ludwig, sophomores Ashley Brown and Zlata Tarasova and freshman Britany Parker were among a host of Jayhawks to claim victory at the Illini Invitational Saturday in Champaign, Ill. As a team, the Jayhawk women finished with 149.33 points, good for second place among the four schools competing. The men’s competition was not scored.

Parker, a freshman from McKinney, Texas, posted a NCAA provisional mark and a new facility record in the pole vault by clearing 12-11.50 feet. Senior Laura Gjerde placed fourth in the event with a mark of 11-05.75.

Sophomore Egor Agafonov started his 2007 season where he left off in 2006, capturing the men’s weight throw with a NCAA provisionally qualifying throw and new facility record of 68-06.50. Senior captain Cody Roberts finished second in the event with a throw of 58-01.00.

Brown, a 2007 team captain, won the 60 meter hurdles in a personal-best time of 8.65 seconds. Ludwig captured the men’s mile run with a time of 4:22.10. Tarasova, who placed second in the weight throw at the 2006 Big 12 Championships, defeated five other competitors with a toss of 56-07.50 feet.

Both the men’s and women’s teams competed excellently in the 600 meter run, an event that is not run in Big 12 competition. Senior Janiece Gatson and sophomore Charity Stowers finished first and second, respectively, in the 600 meters. Gaston won the event in 1:36.20 while Stowers came in right on her heels at 1:36.66. Junior Matt Baysinger and senior Clif Mitchell also took the top-two spots in the event. Baysinger finished in 1:17.48 and Mitchell placed second in 1:20.90.

Freshman Jack Sachse won the 800 meters for the second-consecutive meet in a time of 1:53.28. Sophomore Stephanie Horton also won the shot put for the second-straight meet with a NCAA provisionally qualifying toss of 50-00.75. Junior team captain Paul Hefferon captured the men’s 3000 meters in a time of 8:21.32.

Junior Barrett Saunders placed fifth in the 60 meter dash (7.21 seconds) and third in the long jump (22-02.25 feet). Junior Julius Jiles took third in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 8.19 seconds. Jiles also took third in the 200 meter dash (23.16 seconds).

Sophomores Sha’Ray Butler and Victoria Howard also found success in their respective events. Butler took fifth in the 400 meters in a time of 59.25 seconds. Howard set a new personal-best time in the 60 meter dash, taking third in 7.73 seconds and finished second in the 200 meters in a time of 25.17.

Senior Melissa O’Rourke, freshman Lauren Bonds and senior Melissa Moody placed second, third and fourth respectively in the 800 meters. Senior Crystal Manning took second in the long jump with a leap of 18-06.50 feet. Junior team captain Alicia McGregor set a new personal best in the 3000 meters, finishing second in a time of 10:28.63.

The Jayhawks return to the track on Saturday, Jan. 20, when they host the Jayhawk Invitational at Anschutz Pavilion. The invitational is scheduled to run all day. Check back with kuathletics.com for more information on the meet and all the results.
