Tennis to Begin Season With Trio of Duals

Jan. 17, 2007

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The 59th-ranked University of Kansas tennis team will kick off its spring dual season with matches against Indiana, Tulsa and Drake this weekend in Lawrence.

KU will play host to No. 43 Indiana on Saturday at 9 a.m., and then on Sunday will compete in a 10 a.m. contest against Tulsa and a 3 p.m. tilt with Drake.

The Jayhawks enter the 2007 campaign with high expectations after going 14-11 last season. The Jayhawks return six players from last year’s squad, including All-Big 12 performers Elizaveta Avdeeva and Ksenia Bukina.

Kansas also welcomes freshman Kunigunda Dorn, who proved during the fall season that she will be a key contributor to the Jayhawks this year. The Sopron, Hungary, native went 8-7 in singles play and won the championship of the Flight B singles draw at the Hoosier Classic.

All three of this weekend’s opponents were on KU’s 2006 schedule as well. The Jayhawks opened last season with a 5-2 loss to the Hoosiers in Bloomington, but collected wins of 7-0 over Drake and 4-3 over Tulsa.

The duals will all be played at the new home of Kansas Tennis, First Serve, which is located at 5200 Clinton Parkway in Lawrence.
