Jayhawks to Open Season with Matches Against Indiana and Ball State

Jan. 19, 2006

LAWRENCE, Kan. — The University of Kansas tennis team will open its 2006 spring season on Sunday, Jan. 22 in Bloomington, Ind. with matches versus Indiana and Ball State. The two matches are the first of 23 Big 12 and non-conference contests this spring.

Kansas heads into the season optimistic, as the fall season was a successfully one for the young Jayhawks. KU finished with a 26-42 singles record, while posting a 24-20 doubles mark.

Playing a vital role in the strong fall was freshman Ksenia Bukina, who enters the spring ranked 79th in the nation and No. 14 in the Central Region. Also ranked for the Jayhawks is sophomore Elizaveta Avdeeva, who checks in at No. 29 in the Central Region.

KU returns six members from last year’s squad, and features three freshmen. Along with Bukina, from Obninsk, Russia, Edina Horvath, a Budapest, Hungary native, and Yuliana Svistun of UFA Russia also enter their first spring season with Jayhawks. Svistun will see her first collegiate action in the season opener, as she did not compete with the team during the fall.

Results from the Indiana and Ball State matches will be available at www.kuathletics.com shortly after play is completed.
