Jayhawks Perfect in Doubles Play on Day Three of Hawaii Spring Invitational

HONOLULU, Hawaii —

All three University of Kansas doubles tandems picked up victories on Friday, capping another successful day for the Jayhawk tennis team at the Hawaii Spring Invitational.

Leading the way was KU’s duo of freshmen Maria Martinez and Magdalena Torarczyk, who defeated Hawaii’s Zorec and Goldman, 8-2, to improve to 2-1 at the event. Senior Elizaveta Avdeeva and junior Edina Horvath also improved to 2-1 in Hawaii with an 8-3 win over Alabama’s Welcher and Bigos.

Also notching a victory on Friday was the tandem of freshmen Kate Goff and Emily Gorham, which won for the second day in a row. Goff and Gorham, who are each competing in their first event as Jayhawks, outlasted Alabama’s Wettermark and Nolen, 9-8.

In singles action, senior Stephanie Smith continued her impressive comeback from an ankle injury, improving to 3-0 with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Hawaii’s Goldman. Torarczyk also won her third match in as many tries, rolling past Alabama’s Emery, 6-2, 6-0.

Martinez, an Abingdon, Md., native, saw her record improve to 2-1 at the Invitational with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hawaii’s Beswick.
