LAWRENCE, Kan.

Kansas Athletics Wednesday night presented a $100,000 check to the American Red Cross for the relief effort in earthquake-stricken Haiti.

Athletics Director Lew Perkins presented the check to Jane Blocher, executive director of the Douglas County Chapter of the American Red Cross during the KU-Baylor men’s basketball game.

KU fans donated cash at the men’s and women’s basketball games at Allen Fieldhouse last weekend. Fans also contributed online at kuathletics.com. between January 16-20. Those efforts netted nearly $50,000. Kansas Athletics, Perkins, Bill Self and Bonnie Henrickson all matched a portion of the donations to bring the total to $100,000.

“We are very pleased to make this donation in the name of our coaches, student-athletes, administrators and fans” Perkins said. “Everyone involved with this effort should be very proud. They have proven yet again the immense generosity of the Kansas spirit. Together, Jayhawk Nation has made an important, positive contribution to the lives of many suffering people.”
