Tennis Opens Season With Victory

Topeka, Kan. – The University of Kansas tennis team started the season with a 4-3 victory over Illinois State Saturday at the Wood Valley Racquet Club in Topeka. After earning the first point of the day by winning two of the doubles matches, the `Hawks dropped the first three singles matches before rallying to win the final three singles matches to propel the team to a 4-3 victory.
The junior duo of Christine Skoda and Luiza Loureiro got things started with an 8-2 victory over ISU’s Laura Gravino and Ashley Maxwell. The freshman tandem of Lauren Hommell and Stephanie Smith secured the doubles point with their hard-fought 8-6 victory over Emilie Sechaud and Carolyn Parent.
After dropping the first three singles matches, KU got a spark from sophomore Ashley Filberth as the Kansas City, Mo. native came from behind to defeat Ashley Maxwell from Illinois State, 3-6, 7-5, 6-2. Loureiro continued the Jayhawks quest for victory as she dropped Carolyn Parent, 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1. With both teams tied at 3-3, Stephanie Smith finished off the day with a 6-7 (4), 6-4, 6-3 victory over the Redbird’s Emilie Sechaud.
“I was very proud of the way our team played today. We played with a lot of heart and we battled for every point,” Hall-Holt said. “We still have a lot of work to do, but it is great to start the season with a win.”
Kansas will next be in action on Saturday, Jan. 29, when the Jayhawks will host the BYU Cougars in Overland Park, Kan. The event takes place at the Overland Park Racquet Club and will begin at 5 p.m.
