KU Cheer Sixth, Rock Chalk Dancers Ninth at National Competition

Jan. 23, 2013

Kansas’ spirit squad represented the University well over the weekend, placing in the top-10 at the 2013 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship. The KU cheer team finished sixth in Division IA Large Coed while the Rock Chalk Dancers claimed ninth place in Division IA Hip Hop.

Considered to be the most prestigious college cheerleading championship in the country, the 2013 Championships were held Jan. 18 – 20 at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Fla.

Competing against 16 of the nation’s elite teams in the semis, KU Cheer qualified for the finals. The Jayhawks then moved up the rankings with their sixth-place finish among the 13 finalist squads, improving on 10th place from a year ago.

After a two-year hiatus from national competition, the Rock Chalk Dancers came back onto the scene in fine form in the hip hop dance category. The dancers advanced from the semifinal round of 23 teams to the finals against 12 other Division IA dance squads, where they finished in ninth place overall.

Aiding both the KU cheer team and the Rock Chalk Dancers in their respective national competitions were their perfect scores of 15 on their Crowd Spirit Tapes.

Junior Zach Procak and senior Jordan Snyder paired up for the partner stunt competition and came away with a sixth-place result against 19 other duos from across the nation.

Kansas spirit squad coordinator Cat Jarzemkoski was pleased with the team’s 2013 national finishes, especially being that the top-10 places came against very competitive fields.

Finishing in the top-10 in their respective categories allows the Kansas spirit squad to be featured on national television, as ESPN will air the 2013 UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship on its network in February and March.
