KU Soccer Announces Spring Slate

Jan. 24, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The second annual alumni game will kick-off a six-game spring schedule for the Kansas soccer team. Former KU soccer players will take on Kansas’ returning letterwinners on Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m. at the Jayhawk Soccer Complex.

A week later the Jayhawks welcome former Big 12 school Nebraska (7-10-1) on March 10 and close out the month hosting South Dakota State on March 31. The Jayhawks topped SDSU, which went 12-6-2 last year, 2-1 during its 2011 campaign.

KU will then hit the road traveling to Iowa City where it will face Minnesota (9-10-2) and Iowa (13-4-2) on April 15. The spring slate comes to an end on April 22 versus Missouri State (12-5-2), another familiar opponent. Kansas defeated the Bears 3-1 last fall on the road.

“I think we’re playing some good competition and it’s nice that four of them are at home,” said Mark Francis, the Jayhawks’ 13th-year head coach. “The biggest thing is there are certain things we look at to work on in the spring. Putting those into a game situation against somebody else, we are able to see how we’re progressing and if those things are working. The results don’t count for anything; you want to win because obviously, that’s part of the mentality, but it is more about the development of things we’re looking to improve on in the spring.”

After going 11-8-1 overall last fall, Kansas earned its fifth NCAA Tournament bid and first since 2008. Despite falling 2-0 to Georgia in the postseason, KU tallied its third-most goals in program history scoring 46 times throughout the year. The Jayhawks return all 11 of its starters, including NSCAA All-Central Region selections Whitney Berry, Liana Salazar and Ingrid Vidal.
