Celebrate Women in Sports Day With Free KU Women's Basketball Game
Jan. 26, 2012
LAWRENCE, Kan. – All girls and women can come watch the Kansas women’s basketball game versus Oklahoma for free on Tuesday, January 31 at 7 p.m. The free admission is part of KU’s celebration of the 26th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD).
For more than 110 years NAGWS has been a voice in the world for all girls and women in sport – athletes, teachers, coaches and administrators at all levels- advocating for gender equity issues, career advancement, media representation, injury prevention and much more. Since the passage of Title IX in 1972, sport participation numbers for girls and women have skyrocketed. Despite the stunning advances made in the past 40 years, high school girls still receive 1.3 million fewer participation opportunities than do boys.
The first Jayhawk women’s basketball team took the court in 1969 along with the school’s first softball, swimming and gymnastics squads. Today, Kansas fields 10 women’s sports teams, which include more than 250 female student-athletes.
