Kansas Track and Field Returns To Action Hosting Jayhawk Classic

Jan. 27, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

For the fourth and final time of the 2010-11 indoor track and field season, the Kansas Jayhawks are hosting an indoor meet at Anschutz Pavilion. The 2011 Jayhawk Classic will be the largest meet of the season to date, with 23 schools competing on Friday, January 28, including Arkansas Pine-Bluff, Drake, Lincoln (Mo.), and South Florida, along with local schools Emporia State, Fort Hays State and UMKC.

For the first of the 2011 season, the pentathlon will be added to the meet schedule. The Jayhawks will only have one athlete participate in the event, sophomore Rebecca Neville. Neville won the event at last year’s Jayhawk Classic, with a score of 3,562 – that included two individual victories in the long jump and 60-meter hurdles.

After clearing 2.10 meters (6-10.75 ft), which set a new personal best and won the high jump at the KU-MU Dual, junior Nick Canton will look for another good performance this Friday.

Eight athletes for the Crimson and Blue who will be competing Friday went home victorious at last year’s event. Kendra Bradley (400 meters), Jamaica Collins (triple jump), Andrea Geubelle (long jump), Rebecca Neville (pentathlon), Rebeka Stowe (mile), Taylor Washington (600 meters, 4×400 meter relay), Kyle Clemons (200 meters) and Donny Wasinger (mile) all took home individual titles.

Bradley won the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.02, and will look to win the same title for the second-straight year.

The Jayhawks will look for a strong showing from senior Keron Toussaint, who is competing in the 600 meters and will be a member of the 4×400-meter relay squad.

On the women’s side, Stowe will be competing for the second time this season, running in the 3K and the Distance Medley Relay.

The Jayhawk Classic will kick off at 11 a.m., with the pentathlon 60-meter hurdles at Anschutz Pavilion on Friday.
