LAWRENCE, Kan. – –

The Kansas tennis team kicks off its spring season Saturday as it takes on Drake at 10 p.m. at Roger Knapp Tennis Center in Des Moines, Iowa.

“I was really impressed with how the girls came back in shape for practice last week,” said head coach Amy Hall-Holt, who is in her seventh year as the head coach at Kansas. “You could tell that they had been working hard over break. I know we’re young and still learning a lot, but I think the girls are really buying into being successful this year.”

The team recorded a successful fall 52-44 overall record and four players qualified for the ITA Regional Tournament in Norman, Okla. Included in the four are two freshmen, Sara Lazarevic and Victoria Khanevskaya.

Lazarevic posted an impressive 6-3 record in her first semester as a Jayhawk while Khanevskaya had a 7-2 doubles record with partners Ekaterina Morozova and Erin Wilbert.

Morozova, a sophomore, earned All-Big 12 doubles honors in 2008-09 with former Jayhawk Edina Horvath and continues to build on a career 37-13 doubles record while at Kansas.

Wilbert, also a sophomore, registered a 7-2 fall singles record in 2009 and was named the team’s most improved player of the 2008-09 season.

Saturday’s match marks the 14th time the teams have met dating back to 1976, where the Jayhawks won the contest 9-0 and currently hold an 11-2 lead in the series.

“I’m excited about getting started and seeing what this year can bring us,” said Hall-Holt. “The girls are up to producing and getting better to face the challenges that lie ahead of us.”

KU will open its home season at First Serve Tennis Center to take on No. 6 Notre Dame on Feb. 5 at 3 p.m.
