No. 25 BYU Defeats Kansas, 7-0

Jan. 29, 2005

Overland Park, Kan. – The University of Kansas tennis team was defeated by the No. 25 BYU Cougars Saturday at the Overland Park Racquet Club. The `Hawks were unable to earn a victory in either singles or doubles competition as BYU swept the Jayhawks, 7-0.

Sophomore Brittany Brown lost a tough match in a tiebreaker against BYU’s Sofia Holden, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 (4). The Evansville, Ind. native lost the match after leading much of the second set.

Saturday marked the first collegiate action for the Jayhawks’ Elizaveta Avdeeva. The Obninsk, Russia native got off to a hot start against BYU’s number one singles player Lauren Jones, by winning the first set. Jones proved to be too much for Avdeeva as she won the next two sets to seal the victory, 1-6, 6-1, 6-1.

“We are just a few points away from being where we want to be as a team,” head coach Amy Hall-Holt said. “It is all about competing and being tough and we still have a lot to work on.”

The loss drops the Jayhawks to 1-1 on the season. Next up for the `Hawks is a trip to Oxford, Miss., for a match against Mississippi on February 4.
