LAWRENCE, Kan. – The outlook was bleak for Kansas when head coach Bonnie Henrickson called a timeout with 8:56 remaining against No. 23 Iowa State Wednesday night in Allen Fieldhouse.

At that moment in time, the Cyclones owned a 55-37 lead and had dominated virtually every aspect of the game. Standout senior forward Carolyn Davis had been shut down inside, while a 52 percent first half shooting performance had propelled Iowa State on the offensive end of the floor.

Then, Kansas began its biggest comeback of the season to defeat the Cyclones in overtime, 78-75. Senior guard Angel Goodrich nailed a three-pointer from the top of the key to tie the game, 65-65, at the end of regulation, as part of 27-10 Kansas run in the game’s final 8:48.

Six different Jayhawks contributed points in the final eight minutes of regulation, highlighted by back-to-back buckets by sophomore Natalie Knight to cut the lead to three with 1:46 remaining. Knight scored a career-high 21 points before leaving the game immediately after her final basket with an apparent knee injury.

Iowa State’s Hallie Christofferson responded with a jumper to extend her team’s lead to five before a CeCe Harper layup and a Cyclones turnover gave the Jayhawks a three-point deficit and the ball with 33 seconds left. With 16 seconds remaining, Goodrich pulled-up from the top of the key to hit the game-tying three-pointer, sending most of the 1,987 attending fans in a frenzy.

The Cyclones called three timeouts while trying to inbound the ball in the final six seconds, but none of them yielded a clean shot to end regulation.

After both teams traded baskets for most of the overtime period, Iowa State’s Brynn Williamson hit a three to take a one-point lead with 1:53 remaining. Less than 20 seconds later, Kansas sophomore guard Asia Boyd drained a three-pointer to take back the lead for good.

It was a tale of two halves Wednesday night, with the Cyclones controlling the pace early on. While shooting 52.4 percent from the field, Iowa State held the Jayhawks under 38 percent in the same category to take a 34-25 lead at the intermission.

Those categories completely flip-flopped in the second half, as the Jayhawks shot a fiery 62.5 percent and the Cyclones only made 37.5 percent of their shots from the field.

Goodrich finished with a game-high 24 points and 10 assists, while her five steals propelled her to 204 for her career. Fellow standout senior forward Carolyn Davis scored 13 of her 15 points after halftime and added nine rebounds.

Four Cyclones scored in double figures–Williamson led the way with 19 points, Christofferson added 18 and Anna Prins tacked-on another 16. Chelsea Poppens finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa State.
